About Us
In an industry dominated by companies over a century old, Puget Sound Rope Corporation is a newcomer. The company was founded in 1979 on the premise that change, innovation and new technology are elements needed in an industry calcified by tradition and outdated ideas and methods. The fact that Puget Sound Rope has quickly risen to achieve the level of a major supplier in the field of high performance ropes is a testimony to the need for change.
THE NEW TECHNOLOGY OF ROPE MANUFACTURING
Puget Sound Rope's rapidly growing reputation is based on providing high performance rope of exceptional quality at competitive prices. This would not be possible without major new advances in the technology of rope manufacturing. Here are a few of the manufacturing innovations introduced by Puget Sound Rope:
PLASMA® Patented Process
When Honeywell first introduced their ultra high strength SPECTRA® fiber, Puget Sound Rope started a research program to determine how to best manufacture ropes using this unique fiber. As a result of information gained from this research, Puget Sound Rope has developed a new generation of machinery specifically designed to utilize the full potential of the SPECTRA fiber. The most revolutionary element of the new system is our exclusive PLASMA® Patented Process. With this process we are able to improve the ropes translational efficiency giving it higher strength, lower stretch and better abrasion resistance. Due to their small size and lower weight, the PLASMA processed ropes are less expensive than standard Spectra or Kevlar® ropes. When viewed from a value engineering standpoint, they are often more economical than polyester or nylon ropes.
Digital Measurement
Strand twisting, bobbin winding and braiding are all performed under digital electronic control. The most economical production lot lengths are determined from existing orders and the exact metering data is sent to the appropriate machines. This system saves labor, reduces waste and makes the block creel manufacturing system possible.
Precise Tension Control
The quality of braided rope is largely determined by the consistency of the braid which is dependent upon maintaining exact tension during the strand twisting, bobbin winding and braiding processes. Puget Sound Rope has developed a number of sophisticated tensioning systems to ensure precise tension control at each stage of the manufacturing process.
Block Creel Manufacturing
While other manufacturers may occasionally use the block creel method to meet military specifications, their standard commercial rope is braided with many hidden splices (strand interchanges). Puget Sound Rope's system, with precise measurement of thread and greater bobbin capacity, makes it more economical to manufacture commercial rope with the preferred block creel method. This means rope buyers receive the same high quality rope demanded by the military.
Electronic Braid Angle Control
Braid angle, (pick count) for most rope braiding machines is set using change gears. The ability of a manufacturer to fine-tune the pick count is limited by the variety of the gears available. Puget Sound Rope's exclusive microprocessor controlled braiding machines give infinitely variable control over the pick count. This gives greater flexibility and control of the braid geometry making for a higher quality braid and the ability to produce rope to exacting specifications with a high degree of accuracy.
Tandem Braiding
With Puget Sound Rope's system, double braided rope is manufactured in a single process. The inside (core) braid is completed first and feeds automatically under precisely controlled tension to the second braiding section which braids the outer cover. This method produces a torque free rope with balanced loading of the core and cover.
Computerized Order Tracking
Upon receipt of an order, production data is sent to the manufacturing Plant Floor where the order is merged with other similar requirements and set-up data is loaded onto the appropriate computerized machines. Each length of rope is tracked by means of a unique serial number and all manufacturing information is permanently stored for future reference. This system provides invaluable information on the manufacturing process and raw materials used for each piece of rope. Potential problems can be quickly identified, and accurate testing can be completed.
